Around 25 fire departments based in Wilkes County participated in water training exercises on Aug. 22 that could potentially lead to lower homeowner insurance rates.

The water tanker drills were staged all morning at the Lowe's Park at River's Edge in Wilkesboro, off N.C. 268 West. Around 65 fire trucks took part in the drills, according to Jason Smithey, Wilkesboro Fire Department chief and co-coordinator of the event. Wilkes Fire Marshal Nikki Hamby also coordinated the drills.
