A Taylorsville man shot another man on Main Street in downtown Lenoir Monday morning after an argument, leaving him with life-threatening injuries, the Lenoir Police Department reported.

The man who was shot, Travis Lee Webb, 35, of Spainhour Street, Lenoir, was flown to Carolinas Medical Center Main in Charlotte. No information about his condition was available.

Caldwell County Sheriff Alan Jones, who witnessed the shooting, said Webb was shot twice under his chin.

Chad James Emke, 48, of Linneys Mountain Road in Taylorsville, who had a scheduled court appearance in Lenoir on Monday for custody-related issues, was in a Ford pickup with a 10-year-old boy in front of the Caldwell County Courthouse about 10:50 a.m. when Webb approached the pickup, according to a police press release. The two appeared to be arguing when Emke pulled out a pistol and shot twice through the driver’s side window.

After the shooting, Emke got out of his pickup and surrendered himself with his hands raised as Webb lay in the street screaming, said Shannon Dula, who was at the courthouse to pick up her daughter and saw the shooting.

Candace Wright said she was in the courthouse when she heard screaming. She couldn’t tell what was going on until she saw the pickup parked outside with a bullet hole in the window.

As police and emergency medical workers surrounded Webb, people scattered up and down the sidewalk strained to see Webb. Police cars, fire trucks and emergency vehicles blocked Main Street.

Police did not release any information about what Emke and Webb had been arguing about but said that the two “were acquainted with one another.”

Emke was charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury and child endangerment. His bond is set at $500,000 secured.
