GLADYS SHUMATE HANDY

Gladys Grace Shumate Handy celebrated her 90th birthday on May 13 with a party given by her family. Nearly 100 people visited her that day, and others visited the week prior and after.

Her birthday cake was decorated to look like a family tree, with names of her husband and children. The cake was designed by her daughter-in-law, Tammy Handy. Two of her grandsons, Mike and Jeff Jolly, smoked barbecue for the celebration.

Handy was born May 10, 1928, to Mamie Lowe Shumate and Charlie Shumate. She was married to the late Lonnie Handy for 63 years.

The Handys had seven children, Joyce Faw, Marie Jolly, Peggy Knox, Mary Minton, Carl Handy, Ray Handy and the late Clara Belle Handy; 14 grandchildren and step-grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren and step-grandchildren.

Mrs. Handy worked in the lunchroom of Roaring River Elementary and is a homemaker. She is the oldest living member of Middle Cross Baptist Church in the Rock Creek community.
