Despite forecasts indicating otherwise, Wilkes County was spared the brunt of an ice storm on Feb. 18.

The worst point for power outages in Wilkes was around 9 a.m., when Duke Energy reported nearly 650 customers without electricity. They included 254 in northwestern North Wilkesboro and 390 in the Windy Gap area of the Little Brushy Mountains.

The area of North Wilkesboro without electricity included Wilkes Medical Center, but the hospital has auxiliary power. Outages were more widespread east and south of Wilkes.

A Wilkes Health Department COVID-19 first dose vaccination clinic at Lowe’s Park at River’s Edge was moved from Feb. 18 to Saturday because of weather-related vaccine shipment delays statewide and nationwide.

Wilkes County Schools were closed on Feb. 18 for students and teachers.
