A limited number of fans are available at Wilkes Senior Resources through contributions from Dominion Resources, Duke Energy Carolinas, Duke Energy Progress and the N.C. Division of Aging and Adult Services.

To receive a fan, you must reside in Wilkes County and be 60 or over or have a disability. Fans are intended to provide a more comfortable living environment and reduce heat related illnesses. Call Wilkes Senior Resources at 336-667-5281 if you meet these criteria and would like a fan. Available while supply lasts.

Advance directivesA free advance directives workshop will be held every third Thursday at 1 p.m. at Wilkes Senior Resources at 228 Fairplains School Road, North Wilkesboro. Register by calling 336-667-5281.

ActivitiesWilkes County residents 55 and up can participate in activities at Wilkes Senior Resources, located in the Wilkes Senior Center (former Fairplains Elementary School) off N.C. 18 North in North Wilkesboro.

Tours of the Wilkes Senior Çenter are offered from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Space in classes is more limited than normal due to the COVID-19 restrictions, but names of interested people can be placed on waiting lists. Call 336-667-5281 to learn when activities are scheduled.

Hours of operation, including the Fitness Room, are 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Due to COVID-19, class sizes are reduced.

Activities include billiards, woodworking, wood carving, crafts, chair exercise, arthritis exercise, yoga, tai chi, line dancing, cardio drumming, quilting, dominoes, making Chrismon and pottery.

For inclement weather closings and delays, the Wilkes Senior Center follows the Wilkes Community College schedule. Announcements will also be made on WXII TV and WKBC Radio.

Dance classesLine dance classes are offered at Wilkes Senior Resources at 1:30 and 2:30 p.m. on Mondays, with Freda Degruchy as instructor.

On Wednesdays, Jene Yarborough teaches a line dance class for those with experience at 11 a.m. and a class for beginners at 1 p.m. The classes are free.

Due to COVID-19, face masks and social distancing are required. All dance classes are in the gym at the Wilkes Senior Resources facility. Call for more information and to get names on a waiting list.

Transportation servicesWilkes Senior Resources provides transportation for grocery and personal shopping, bank and other personal business, group meetings and recreation on a first-come, first-served basis for seniors ages 60 and up. Call well in advance to schedule rides.

Tax preparationAARP free tax preparation is available by appointment during tax season. Counseling through Seniors’ Health Insurance Information Program is available to those on Medicare by appointment to compare drug plans and more. Call 336-667-5281.
