A former Ashe County commissioner received a suspended sentence after he pleaded guilty to four counts of indecent liberties with a child in Ashe County Superior Court on Feb. 8.

Judge Michael D. Duncan of Wilkesboro sentenced Larry C. Dix, 69, of Grassy Creek, to 26 to 50 months in prison but suspended this and ordered that he be placed on probation as part of a plea agreement.

Duncan also ordered that Dix register as a sex offender for 30 years and have no contact with the victim in the case.

The State Bureau of Investigation arrested Dix, 69, of Grassy Creek, on four counts of indecent liberties with a minor in August 2020. The offenses occurred between July 1, 2019, and June 19, 2020, stated an SBI press release.

An SBI investigation began on July 3 at the request of District Attorney Tom Horner and Dix was charged after SBI agents consulted with Horner, the release stated.

Dix was an Ashe County commissioner from 2018 until he resigned on Sept. 9, 2020. His term ran through 2022. He served as head coach of the Ashe County High School boys and girls tennis teams from 2011 until last summer.
