Firefighters responded to a report of a house fire on Elledge Mill Road in the Mulberry community late Saturday night.

Wilkes Fire Marshal Nikki Hamby said the fire started in the basement of the house, apparently from smoking materials. He said firefighters were able to quickly extinguish it and limit damage mostly to smoke-related.

Much of the fire was in insulation, which caused a significant amount of smoke, said Hamby.

The Mulberry-Fairplains, Mountain View and Knotville fire departments responded, as well as the Wilkes Rescue Squad.
