The West Wilkes varsity football teams are the latest Wilkes County prep sports squads placed on COVID-19 quarantine protocol after several positive cases forced the cancelation of Friday's football game against Elkin in Millers Creek.
The West Wilkes varsity and junior varsity football teams are both in quarantine, according to David Johnson, Wilkes County athletic director.
“Not all of (the players at West), but enough that they will not be able to play games for the next couple of weeks,” noted Johnson.
The Blackhawks' nonconference varsity game Friday at Patton has been canceled, as has the junior varsity contest Thursday against Ashe County in Millers Creek.
The West Wilkes varsity volleyball team was also put in COVID-19 quarantine protocol after a positive case of the virus.
The Blackhawks were scheduled to host East Wilkes on Thursday, but that match and two others have been canceled until West is permitted to take the court again on Sept. 3. The team was placed on 10-day quarantine on Aug. 24.
West’s next game is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 7, against North Wilkes in Millers Creek.
The East Wilkes volleyball game slated for Aug. 25 at Ashe County High School was canceled due to COVID-19 cases at the West Jefferson school.
“We are hoping to reschedule later in the season, but do not have a date for that game yet,” noted East’s coach, Brinsley Faircloth, on Thursday.
The North Wilkes and Wilkes Central varsity football teams had to cancel their next two games due to COVID-19 protocol. They won’t take the field again until Friday, Sept. 10, with the Vikings hosting Alleghany and the Eagles playing at East Wilkes in a pair of nonconference matchups.
