The Wilkes County Health Department reported the 12th COVID-19-associated death of a Wilkes resident on Monday.

The person, in his/her 80s, died Aug. 9 from complications associated with the virus. Wilkes Health Department Director Rachel Willard said she/he had underlying health conditions and died at Wilkes Medical Center in North Wilkesboro.

The person had been a resident of Westwood Hills Nursing and Rehabilitation in Wilkesboro and contracted COVID-19 during an outbreak at that facility. Willard said the COVID-19 case total at the facility now is 85, including 51 residents and 34 staff members.

As of Monday afternoon, Wilkes had 843 confirmed COVID-19 cases during the pandemic, 684 recoveries and five now hospitalized. The N.C. Department of Health and Human Services reported 136,844 cases, 1,111 hospitalizations and 2,172 deaths related to COVID-19 statewide as of Monday.
