A $50,000 appropriation for the Hunger Coalition in the proposed new state budget is for a new mobile produce market targeting low-income children and their families in Wilkes County.

The money in a spending plan for 2018-19 that has been approved by the Senate and the House and is now before Gov. Roy Cooper for approval or disapproval.

Susan Cogdill, executive director of the Wilkes Community Partnership for Children, said the $50,000 would help fund a vehicle, likely a box truck, with refrigeration for fresh produce as it is transported to different central gathering points in Wilkes such as churches and community center.

Cogdill said the Hunger Coalition and the proposed mobile produce market were among initiatives resulting from the “Raising Places” process in Wilkes, funded with a $60,000 grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

This nine-month interactive process of “learning labs” involved a broad cross-section of Wilkes residents in discussions designed to create healthy, “child-centered” communities. The Health Foundation played a lead role in Wilkes being among a handful of communities chosen nationwide for Raising Places and the process that followed.

Cogdill said multiple agencies, churches, businesses and individuals are involved in the Hunger Coalition.

She said the coalition would purchase fresh fruits and vegetables and then be reimbursed by selling them at various locations where the produce truck stopped in the county, with the goal of only breaking even.

Cogdill said low-income people would be able to purchase produce through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
