Damage was heavy in a collision Monday afternoon on N.C. 18 about eight miles north of North Wilkesboro, according to Trooper R.R. Walker of the N.C. Highway Patrol.

Brian Hampton Goddard, 40, of Millers Creek, driver of a 1996 Nissan, and Shelby Cann Handy, 69, of Hays, driver of a 2010 Toyota, declined treatment by Wilkes EMS personnel. McGrady first responders and firemen provided assistance at the scene.

Goddard was traveling south when he went left of center and struck the northbound Handy car, Walker said.

Goddard was charged with driving while impaired in the wreck, which happened around 1:10 p.m.

Damages were listed at $12,000 to Ms. Handy’s Toyota and $4,500 to Goddard’s Nissan.
