$8.6 million contract awarded for widening N.C. 18 North

The N.C. Department of Transportationi has awarded a contract to widen 3.3 miles of N.C. 18 North, from the Mountain View Road intersection to the Yellow Banks Road intersection near Mulberry Elementary School.

The $8.6 million contract was awarded to Carl Rose & Sons Inc. of Elkin. Work can begin as early as March 4, 2013 and is scheduled to be completed by March 13, 2016.

The purpose of the project is to improve safety along this section of N.C. 18, which is the main road between North Wilkesboro and Sparta. An a turn lane will be added to the existing two-lane road.

A DOT press release said the contract was awarded to the lowest bidder, as required by state law.

Tuition hike explanation unreasonable

In explaining why the community college would need to bill students twice, (Wilkes Journal-Patriot, July 15, 2015), Sen. Shirley Randleman and Rep. Jeffery Elmore, our legislators in Raleigh, explained that as more people get jobs, fewer have to turn to community colleges for retraining. They said this resulted in a shortfall in revenue generated by the community college system, and necessitated a tuition hike to make up the difference.
