A Kohl’s employee has been charged with embezzlement, a felony, in connection with illegally given discounts, according to Officer T.J. Turbyfill of the Wilkesboro Police Department.
Maria Victoria Villalpando, 23, of 1502 Third Street, North Wilkesboro, was arrested Thursday around 8:30 p.m. at Kohl’s, Turbyfill said. She was taken to the Wilkes Intake Center, where she was processed and placed under a $1,000 secured bond.
Aaron Peele, a Kohl’s loss prevention employee, told Turbyfill that he and other loss prevention employees had been investigating Ms. Villalpando since November because of suspicious transactions being made.
The investigation revealed that Ms. Villalpando had been giving unauthorized discounts to friends and other employees, Turbyfill said. He noted that the other employees involved in the transactions no longer work for Kohl’s.
The arrest came about when Ms. Villalpando was caught giving an unauthorized discount to a friend, the officer said. A loss prevention officer confronted her about the situation and she gave a statement detailing what she had done over the past five months.
The amount of loss incurred by Kohl’s was about $4,000, Turbyfill said.
