BRIDGING THE GREENWAY—A new 1.2-mile section of the Yadkin River Greenway was completed with installation of a pedestrian bridge over a large drainage ditch near Smoot Park just before Christmas. A Yadkin River Greenway Council spokesman said a dedication ceremony is planned after signs are put up and other work is completed in a few weeks. The spokesman said the deck of the new bridge is made of ipe (pronounced “ee-pay”) wood from South and Central America, known for its strength and and natural resistance to decay and wet conditions. Three of the six bridge decks on the greenway are made of this wood.
