A second man was arrested Friday afternoon on a murder charge in the Dec. 20 shooting death of James Allen “Jimmy” Shore Jr., 51, of Wiles Ridge Road in Hays, said Wilkes Sheriff Chris Shew.

Brandon James McGrady, 26, of 205 Wiles Ridge Road, was charged and arrested after investigators obtained additional information and discussed the case with District Attorney Tom Horner, said Shew.

Brandon McGrady is the son of Charles Anthony McGrady, 54, of 281 Wiles Ridge Road, who was arrested for murder in Shore’s death on Dec. 21 after investigators saw a state medical examiner’s preliminary autopsy report.

Charles McGrady was released from custody under $100,000 secured bond on Dec. 29. No bond has been set yet for Brandon McGrady, but he was scheduled to have a bond hearing today.

Charles McGrady and Shore were first cousins and had a history of not getting along with each other, said relatives.

Shore was shot multiple times and died after he and Charles McGrady had an argument near their homes on Wiles Ridge Road in Hays, said Major David Carson of the sheriff’s department.

Carson said there were other witnesses to the shooting and that investigators recovered a firearm that they believe was used in the incident.

Shew said Brandon McGrady was charged with murder because he is believed to have acted in concert with his father in the fatal incident.

Shore was shot around 11:40 a.m. and died about a hour later on Dec. 20 after an AirCare helicopter was dispatched to transport him from a landing site near the Traphill Fire Station to Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem.

Shore was in a Wilkes Emergency Medical Service ambulance and was either being transported to the landing site or had just arrived when he died, said Carson.

Sheriff’s department and EMS personnel found Shore lying on the ground in front of his mobile home, about halfway between the western side of Wiles Ridge Road and his home.

Shore’s mobile home is about 150 feet from Wiles Ridge Road and about 400 feet from the intersection of Wiles Ridge and Traphill roads. Homes of Charles McGrady and Brandon McGrady are on the north side of Wiles Ridge Road, directly opposite where Shore lived on the south side of Wiles Ridge Road.

Shore was a few feet from the western edge of Wiles Ridge Road when he was shot, said Carson. A golf cart, which Carson said Charles McGrady was operating, was parked along the north side of Wiles Ridge Road when investigators arrived.
