The Watauga Sheriff’s Department has charged a woman with felony embezzlement and other charges in connection with the misappropriation of about $166,000 from Deerfield United Methodist Church on Deerfield Road in Boone.
Treva J. Jones, 45, of Jakes Mountain Road in Boone was initially arrested Dec. 22 on the embezzlement charge and then released from custody under a $25,000 secured bond.
The first arrest resulted from a report of an employee of the church misusing about $118,000 of the church’s funds, beginning in late 2008. The sheriff’s department received the report on Nov. 21.
According to a press release, the sheriff’s department on Jan. 3 received a report of a former employee of Deerfield United Methodist misappropriating about $48,000 from the church.
As a result, the sheriff’s department arrested Ms. Jones again on Monday on six counts each of felony obtaining property by false pretense, felony forgery and felony uttering a forged instrument.
She was released from custody under $25,000 secured bond and has a court date on March 26.
Capt. Dee Dee Rominger of the Watauga Sheriff’s Department said the money that reportedly was misappropriated is still missing.
