The Wilkes Sheriff's Department on Monday arrested a woman on four counts of statutory rape, said Wilkes Sheriff Chris Shew.
Shew said Malinda Reeves Powell, 32, of Moxley Road, Hays, turned herself in at the sheriff's department office on Curtis Bridge Road in Wilkesboro.
Ms. Powell was placed in the Women's Detention Center in North Wilkesboro with a $15,000 secured bond. She was scheduled to have a first appearance in Wilkes District Court Tuesday morning.
Shew said the victim in the case was identified as a 15-year-old male.
He said the investigation began as a result of information brought to Deputy Earl Byrd, school resource officer (SRO) at North Wilkes High School.
"The investigation determined that she (Ms. Powell) and the victim met at a school ball game at North Wilkes High School last year and exchanged information and began texting each other and ultimately had a sexual relationship," said Shew.
The four counts of statutory rape, all class B1 felonies, are in connection with incidents on four different occasions at a residence from May through July, he said.
Shew said the case's only connection to the Wilkes County school system that he was aware of was that Ms. Powell and the victim met at the ball game. He said Ms. Powell isn't employed by the Wilkes school system.
"The only reason the SRO was involved was that the information came to him," Shew added. Byrd and Det. Robbie Martin are the investigators in the case and the investigation is continuing, said Shew.
