Several notable changes in Wilkes County school positions were included in a personnel report unanimously approved Monday night by the Wilkes Board of Education.
Moravian Falls principal
The report included the hiring of Shanda Adkins as principal at Moravian Falls Elementary School.
Mrs. Adkins spent over half of her 24 years of service in the public schools of North Carolina as an elementary, middle school or high school principal, mostly in Burke County. She currently is principal at Hanford Dole Elementary School in Salisbury.
Mrs. Adkins first served as a principal in a five-year stint at Rutherford College Elementary School in Burke. She was an assistant principal earlier and before that a middle school teacher in Burke.
She was principal at Liberty Middle School in Morganton for two years before becoming the first principal at Robert L. Patton High School in Morganton in January 2007.
After three years at Patton, she was principal at Hillcrest Elementary School in Morganton for about a year and then moved to the Rowan-Salisbury school system to become principal at Hanford Dole Elementary in January 2010.
Mrs. Adkins received a bachelor's degree and a master’s degree in middle grade education, as well as other training, at Appalachian State University. She has an add-on certification in academically gifted education from Lenoir Rhyne University.
She is the wife of J.K. Adkins, hired as head football coach at East Wilkes High School in December 2011.
The transfer of Ramona Hemric from principal at Moravian Falls Elementary to principal at East Wilkes Middle School, effective Jan. 2, was also in the personnel report. Mrs. Hemric fills a position vacated by Carrie Allen, who became principal at Vance Elementary School in Asheville in August. Hal Gatewood has served as interim principal at East.
The personnel report also included:
• promotion of Jason Llewellyn from a fifth grade teaching position at Ronda-Clingman Elementary School to assistant principal at North Wilkes Middle School;
• transfer of Scott Hallock from physical education (PE) teacher at West Wilkes High School to PE teacher at Boomer-Ferguson Elementary School. Hallock announced in mid-November that he was stepping down as head football coach at West Wilkes to allow more time to see his son, Scott Hallock, play football at Appalachian. A new football coach as West Wilkes hasn’t yet been announced;
• leave of absence for Jeffrey Elmore, effective Jan. 3. Elmore said he requested a leave of absence from his position as a visual arts teacher at North Wilkes Middle School for the first six months of his first term as an N.C. House of Representatives for the 94th District. Elmore said the House committees he is appointed would impact whether he returns to teaching while serving in the House;
• retirement of Vicki Minton as secretary at West Wilkes High School after 26 years of service.
Several changes in cafeteria positions were in the personnel report approved at the Nov. 5 meeting, including Nettie E. Bell’s retirement as Traphill Elementary’s cafeteria manager after 27 years of service.
Lennagail Gambill, previously East Wilkes High’s cafeteria manager, replaced Ms. Bell. Janice Stanley transferred from cafeteria manager at Ronda-Clingman Elementary to cafeteria manager at East Wilkes High.
Vickie Adams and Sherry Whitley exchanged positions, with Ms. Adams becoming assistant cafeteria manager at North Wilkes High and Ms. Whitley now Traphill’s assistant cafeteria manager.
Renee Kilby was promoted to cafeteria manager at North Wilkesboro Elementary due to Linda Revis’ leave of absence from that position.
The promotion of Willie Ray Pardue to head custodian at Ronda-Clingman Elementary was also included in the Nov. 5 report.
