Beth and Bob Sidnam were married 71 years ago, on March 4, 1944, in Raleigh.
Mrs. Sidnam is the daughter of the late Charley and Annie Bumgarner of Millers Creek. Mr. Sidnam is the son of the late Fred and Estelle Sidnam of Staten Island, N.Y.
The couple celebrated their anniversary with a family dinner at the home of their daughter, Pat Taylor of Millers Creek.
James and Betty Griffin Nelson of Hays celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a reception in their honor at the Clingman Community Center, on April 3, 2015, at 6 p.m.
Hosts were the couple’s children, Rosa Plumley (Ricky Plumley) of Wilkesboro, CSM Alex Nelson (Dawn Nelson) of Missouri, Chris Nelson (Barbara Nelson) of Ronda, Billy Joe Nelson and Johnny Nelson, both of Hays. The Nelsons also have 14 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
CSM Nelson wasn’t able to attend the celebration, because he is serving as command sergeant major for the United States Army in Kosovo.
The Rev. Carl Otto Boggs Sr. and Annie Ruth Boggs celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on March 13, 2015. They were married at the home of the late Rev. Johnny Dancy, who officiated their wedding on March 13, 1965.
Rev. and Mrs. Boggs have two daughters, two sons, three grandsons, four granddaughters and two late grandsons. They also have one great-grandson, three great-granddaughters and one late great-granddaughter.
Their children, Rebecca Sweat, David Boggs, Carl Boggs Jr., Ellen Boggs Shepherd and their oldest granddaughter, Melissa Sweat Stone, held a 50th anniversary party at Fair View Baptist Church Fellowship Hall on March 14, 2015, at 2 p.m.

Mrs. Spears is retired from Wilkes County Schools. Mr. Spears is retired from Vulcan Materials Rock Quarry.
Dewey and Vada Sue Jennings celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on Monday, Aug. 25, 2014. They were married Aug. 25, 1954 in Wilkes County.
Mr. and Mrs. Jennings have two children, Kenny Jennings of Wilkesboro and Robin Jennings of Millers Creek.
They are retired poultry farmers for Tyson Foods.
Gary and Donna Handy of Cabin Creek Road, Hays celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Nov. 25, 2014. They were married the day before Thanksgiving in 1964, in the home of Mr. Handy’s father, Clyde Handy.
Mr. and Mrs. Handy’s children are Steve, and wife, Karen Handy, and Keith, and wife, Jennie Handy, all of Wilkes County. They also have three grandchildren, Dallas, Hannah-Lee and Houston.
The Handys are members of Mount Zion Baptist Church.
Clyde Wood and Mary Hayes Wood celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a reception in their honor on Nov. 2, 2014 at Dehart Baptist Church Fellowship Hall.
The event was given by their daughter, Martha Wood Mathis, and husband, Joey, their granddaughter, Danielle Mathis Griffith, and grandson, Joel Mathis. The couple have one great-granddaughter, Sadie Griffith.

Claude and Betty Billings of Wilkesboro, residents of Rose Glen, are celebrating their 70th wedding anniversary today, Nov. 14, 2014. They were married Nov. 14, 1944, in South Carolina.
Mr. and Mrs. Billings’ children are Sandy and Tony Clark of Matthews and Kathy and Derek Poarch of Lenoir.
They also have seven grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.
Otto Rhodes Jr. and Geraldine Brooks Rhodes celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a reception in their honor on Oct. 12, 2014, at the Bethel Baptist Church Vision Center.
The event was given by the couple’s daughters, Lisa Rhodes Hall, and husband, James, of Ferguson, and Denise Rhodes Wilson and husband, Rick, of Hays.

The couple was married Oct. 22, 1966. Mr. Wiles is a retired Tyson Foods poultry farmer and a United States Army Veteran. Mrs. Wiles is a homemaker and enjoys playing the piano.

John and Carol Johnson Kennedy celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Saturday, Aug. 30, 2014, at the Mountain View Ruritan Building in Hays.
About 100 friends and family members attended to help them celebrate. The Kennedys were married at the bride’s home in Hays by Lester Johnson, father of the bride.
The bride was born to Lester and Eulala Church Johnson. The groom was born to Claude and Maude Warren Kennedy.
C.M. Shumate and Lois Ann Hawkins Shumate celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on July 19, 2014.
They celebrated with a trip to the Great Smoky Mountains during their anniversary weekend, and then were honored at a celebration with friends and family at Benton Hall, North Wilkesboro, on July 26. Hosts were their two sons.

Joe and Idesta Reynolds Lyon celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Saturday, Aug. 23, 2014, in the fellowship building of Austin Baptist Church, surrounded by family and friends. The couple was married Aug. 23, 1964 at Benham Baptist Church, with the Rev. Amos Lyon officiating.
Mr. and Mrs. Lyon’s children are Keith Lyon (and wife Kathy) of Elkin; Angela Johnson (and husband Greg) of Waxhaw; and the late Bobby Joe Lyon, who died in 1989. Their eight grandchildren are Brett and Ethan Lyon of Elkin; the late Kathryn Nicole Johnson, who died in 1991; Bethany, Luke, Anna, Timothy and Caroline Johnson of Waxhaw.
Mr. Lyon retired from Sprint in 1999, after 38 years of employment. Mrs. Lyon is a homemaker. They are devoted parents and grandparents who enjoy spending time with their family and friends.
James and Donna Hincher Bishop celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary Sept. 29, 2014. They were married Sept. 29, 1969.
The Bishops are both retired. They have two sons, James Bishop Jr. and Jason Bishop, both of Olin. They also have four granddaughters.
Richard and Ann Cockerham Watkins will celebrate 50 years of marriage on Friday, Sept. 26, 2014. They were married on Sept. 26, 1964 at Rickard’s Chapel AME Zion Church.
Mr. Watkins retired from the Town of Wilkesboro where he worked for 21 years. He also served on the Wilkesboro Fire Department for 23 years. He is a member of Beulah Presbyterian Church and is a part of the Men In Christ Service Ministry.
Mrs. Watkins retired from Wilkes County Schools after 32-1/2 years as a librarian at Ronda-Clingman Elementary School. She is a member of Rickard’s Chapel AME Zion Church.
Robert Ray Brown and Bobbie Jean Walsh Brown of Wilkesboro celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a reception in their honor in the fellowship hall of Shady Grove Baptist Church, on Aug. 10, 2014. The event was given by the women of Shady Grove Baptist Church.
The couple has two children, Alan Junior Brown and Barbara Gail Brown Church, both of Wilkesboro, and one grandson, Noah Gabriel Sparks.
Mr. Brown was a carpenter and is now retired. Mrs. Brown worked in the textile industry and is also retired.

The couple’s children are Carole DeGruchy of Seattle, Wash. and David (D.W.) DeGruchy Jr. of Deep Gap.
Mr. DeGruchy retired from the Federal Aviation Administration Andrews Air Force Base in Suitland, Md. Mrs. DeGruchy retired from teaching in St. Mary’s County in Maryland. Mrs. DeGruchy teaches clogging and line dance classes in Wilkes and Alexander counties.

Ernest Lee Key Sr. and Linda Wyatt Key celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on June 14, 2014, by renewing their wedding vows at Haymeadow Baptist Church in Hays.
The renewal service was performed by the couple’s son, Brother Larry Key, and was directed by their daughter-in-law, Mrs. Marlene Key. Their oldest son, Ernest Lee Key III, served as best man. Bridesmaids were Danielle and Brittany Key, granddaughters of the couple. Flower girl was Sarah Richardson, a great-niece.
After the ceremony, the couple enjoyed a time of fellowship with their family, church family and friends, in the church fellowship hall. Guests were served a three-tiered wedding cake, decorated with ribbons and daisies, which was made by their daughter-in-law, Jill Thomasson.

Harry (Hank) and Janice Poff of Wilkesboro, who were married in Salem, Ohio, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary May 16, 2014, with a family dinner.
The couple’s children are Wayne (wife Laura) of Morganton, Drew (wife JacquaLynn) of North Wilkesboro and daughter, Lori Kellogg (husband Steven) of Wilmington, Del. They also have seven grandchildren, three who reside in Delaware, one grandson who resides in New York City, N.Y., one granddaughter in Arlington, Va. and two granddaughters in North Wilkesboro.
Mr. Poff served eight years in the United States Air Force during the Korean War and did numerous factory jobs and railroad work for 10 years. In 1993, he retired from civilian government service after 12 years of employment in Marshall, Texas.

Mr. Jenkins presented Mrs. Jenkins with a new set of diamond rings. After the dinner, the guests were served a slice of the anniversary cake.

They were married March 14, 1942 in Wilkes County.

On Aug 24, 2013, John S. “Steve” and Kay Walker Steele celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a surprise dinner at the Brushy Mountain Smokehouse and Creamery. It was given by their sons and daughters-in-law, Christopher and Elaine Steele of North Wilkesboro and Todd and Sarah Steele of Garner.
The Steeles were married by the Rev. Clarence Eden at Moravian Falls Baptist Church on Sept. 1, 1963. With the exception of time spent in college and the United States Army, the Steeles have resided in Wilkes County. Mr. Steele, son of the late Jim and Margaret Steele of Greensboro and North Wilkesboro, is a retired self-employed licensed surveyor. Mrs. Steele, daughter of the late Bernard and Nora Walker of Moravian Falls, is a registered nurse and licensed electrologist.
The 50 guests included the members of their immediate families; as many of the original wedding party members as possible; the Rev. Phil and Sherry Stone of Wake County; the Rev. Steve Snipes; and Jim and Martha Phillips Philpott of Asheboro.
Benny Samuel Alexander and Sue Blankenship Alexander celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Oct. 26, 2013, with a reception at the Wilkesboro Civic Center. The couple’s daughters gave the event.
Family and friends were served heavy hors d’oeuvres, a chocolate fountain and fruit, punch and a three-tiered wedding cake consisting of Italian cream, chocolate and strawberry layers. The cake was adorned with yellow roses and was topped with a 50th emblem and yellow roses. Decorations for the reception included photos of the couple’s wedding day, family photos taken over the past 50 years, and gold and fall accents.
Several out-of-town guests attended including Mr. Alexander’s brother, Paul Alexander of Center, Texas, and sister Judy (Bob) Slone of Greensboro and Mrs. Alexander’s sister, Stella (Ed) Roberts of Shelby. A very special guest was Bob Alexander, age 95, Mr. Alexander’s father.

Andy Lee and Linda Carol Shepherd Shore will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary Saturday, Dec. 21, 2013. They were married 50 years ago at the home of their pastor, the Rev. Muncie H. Absher in the Mulberry community on the birthday of both of Mrs. Shore’s grandfathers, James H. Shepherd and Mitchell A. Vannoy.
Mrs. Shore is the daughter of the late Malery B. and Ethel Vannoy Shepherd of the Reddies River community. She graduated from West Wilkes High School and Central Wesleyan College and taught third grade at Millers Creek Elementary School for 18 years until she was forced to take early retirement due to injuries received in an automobile accident.
Mr. Shore is the son of the late Anderson (Andy) Dailey Shore and Pauline West Shore of Caldwell County. He served in the National Guard, worked for a while in the furniture industry and retired from Roadway Express after a long career as a long distance truck driver. He received awards for driving over 3 million miles without an accident.
Robert B. and Mary E. MacRae of Lewis Fork Road, Ferguson, celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary on Dec. 16, 2013.
The couple has two children, Robin Duff and husband, Grover, and Robert MacRae and wife, Joyce. They also have five grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Mr. and Mrs. MacRae were married Dec. 16, 1950 in Maryland.
Paul N. Shore Jr. and Brenda Chambers Shore celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a reception in their honor on Nov. 17, 2013, at Union Baptist Church CAC, Hamptonville. The event was given by family and friends.
The couple’s children are Kamela Hemric and family of Hamptonville, Derrick Shore and family of North Wilkesboro and Chad Shore and family, also of Hamptonville. They have eight grandchildren.
A Holland theme was carried out in the decorations using windmills, wooden shoes, Dutch boys and girls and tulip flower arrangements on the tables. The original 1963 Ford in which the Shores dated was parked outside the reception area. Mrs. Shore’s wedding dress, the garments she wore on her honeymoon and the suit in which Mr. Shore was married were on display, as well as a table of family photographs over the past 50 years.
