School board to meet Monday

A special Wilkes Board of Education meeting planned July 26 and then postponed is now scheduled for 11 a.m. Aug. 2 at the school board meeting room on Cherry Street, North Wilkesboro.
The meeting is for a personnel matter and an unrelated bond forfeiture.
Although school officials say they can't identify the specific personnel topic, the Wilkes Journal-Patriot learned that the board will hear Tommy Johnson's request to be rehired as North Wilkes High School varsity basketball coach.
North Wilkes Principal Helen Johnson told Johnson on June 2 that he had been removed as North Wilkes varsity basketball coach and transferred to teach at an elementary school. Mrs. Johnson's retirement as principal was announced June 4.
Johnson filed a grievance with Mrs. Johnson to protest his firing on June 4 and Dr. Steve Laws, Wilkes school superintendent, heard the appeal on June 21. Laws upheld Mrs. Johnson's decision the same day.
