Vandalism spree is under investigation
by Jule Hubbard
Investigators believe a vandalism spree that occurred Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning in the Wilkesboros and outside the towns involved marbles being fired from a slingshot.
At least three incidents occurred in Wilkesboro and at least one each in North Wilkesboro and outside the Wilkesboros, according to Wilkesboro and North Wilkesboro police departments and Wilkes Sheriff's Department investigative reports.
The sheriff's department is investigating Gary Kenneth Helzer's report of about $450 in damage to a double-pane window on his home on Mount Carmel Road in Moravian Falls between 7:30 p.m. Tuesday and 10 a.m. Wednesday.
Sgt. Mike Bartelson of the sheriff's department said Helzer found a clear marble that appeared to be the projectile used. Bartelson said it appeared the window could have been shot from Mount Carmel Road.
Wilkesboro's three cases are:
• about $750 in damage from a large glass window and a stained glass window being broken at Great State Auction Co. on Main Street. A security video indicated it occurred about 3:44 a.m. Wednesday, reported Officer G.T. Anderson. A vehicle involved in the incident, possibly a white Chrysler, was captured on the video, Anderson reported;
• about $500 in damage from the rear window of a Ford Explorer being broken out while parked at Myers Tire on East Main Street, Wilkesboro, between 6 p.m. Tuesday and 7:18 a.m. Wednesday, reported Officer D.R. Church. The vehicle belongs to Crystal Williams of Millers Creek, a customer of Myers Tire;
• about $500 in damage to a window on the Michael McElligott home on Woodfield Circle being broken about 2:50 a.m. Wednesday, McElligott said he heard what sounded like a light bulb bursting about that time and then found a hole in the window, reported Officer R.T. Rhodes. McElligott said the only auto he saw passing by about that time appeared to be a sport utility vehicle.
Det. Ann Williams said the North Wilkesboro Police Department is investigating similar damage to one or the large windows on the Don's Char-Grill building on D Street, North Wilkesboro during this same period.
