Headed to College race raises over $12,000

The seventh annual "CIS Headed to College Race" Saturday drew over 160 runners and raised over $12,000 for the Communities In Schools' New Century Scholars program.
Philip Curley was the overall winner of the 8k race, with a time of 29:59.2. Jennifer Leone was the top overall female in the 8k with a time of 33:18.1 and in the 5k with a time of 19:53.8.
The 5k was won by German Perez with a time of 17:06.7. Tradin Allen took top honors in the 1-mile fun run.
The 8k race and 1-mile fun run began at 8 a.m. The 8k race started at Central Wilkes Middle School and finished at Wilkes Community College's Watson Stage.
The one-mile fun run started and ended at the Watson Stage. The 5k race began at 9 a.m. at WCC and finished at the Watson Stage. Races were broken down into several different categories. They included male and female categories broken down further by ages ranging from 14 and under to 70 and over.
After the races, runners were treated to food and music and winners were recognized for their efforts.
The New Century Scholars program awards scholarships to sixth-graders for use upon graduating from high school. Students in the program perform 10 hours of community service each year as a way of giving back. Donors and businesses give $1,000 each to a foundation at Wilkes Community College and CIS maintains the program.
The race would not have been successful without the help of all of the volunteers who helped along the routes, said an organizer.
