Property visits planned for new 911 addressing

Representatives of L. Robert Kimball & Associates Inc., through a contract with Wilkes County government, will visit different properties March 23 to April 30 to complete the county's 911 re-addressing project.
They'll collect address, ownership and telephone information.
"Each L.R. Kimball employee has identification proving that they are collecting this information on behalf of the county," stated a press release.
"At no point will staff need to enter anyone's home. The information collected is to help improve public safety in the county.
The contract price is $145,000 for the company's work is from a 911 surcharge of 80 cents included with monthly cell or land phone bills. Phone companies send the money to state government, which distributes it to counties. About $1.4 million is in the county's 911 surcharge fund.
The new countywide addressing is based on Global Positioning System (GPS) coordinates.
Major Greg Minton of the Wilkes Sheriff's Department, among county officials overseeing the project, said a Kimball official stated that only 5-10 percent of the addresses in the county would change.
Minton said around 16 to 20 roads could get new names to eliminate situations where different sections of the same road have different names and where road names are the same or similar.
Any point on Earth can be exactly and consistently identified with satellite-based GPS coordinates that tie in with longitude and latitude lines, thereby making them compatible with other GPS-based digital map layers.
Minton said GPS-based addresses would improve delivery of emergency services because they would be consistent and compatible with other map and directional systems.
People with questions can call the Wilkes Sheriff's Department at 903-7600.
