Volunteers recognized at WCC event Thursday

Wilkes Community College honored volunteers on Thursday with the annual Volunteer Recognition Reception. The event was held in the Lakey Ballroom at the John A. Walker Community Center.
"We want our volunteers to feel special year-round, but this event is our major opportunity to let all our volunteers know that we appreciate everything they do for the college, the Walker Center and MerleFest," WCC Volunteer Coordinator Debbie Cangiolosi said.
The highlight of each year's event is the presentation of the Chloe Sturdivant Award for Volunteer Excellence. The 2009 award was presented to Mona McRae, a WCC alumnus and active volunteer with various areas of the college, the Walker Center and MerleFest.
Recently, she has become more active with the MerleFest Volunteer Relations Team by assisting with the year-round management of the application and assignment process, being available during the festival to assist the volunteer coordinator as needed and developing the "Volunteer Spotlight" section of the festival's electronic newsletter.
"Mona volunteers simply because she loves it," Cangiolosi commented. "Her year-round work promotes and encourages volunteerism and I am always impressed with how much time, effort and heart she puts into everything from tedious record-keeping to the creative activity of developing our Volunteer Spotlight. We are so proud to be able to honor her work."
In keeping with the spirit of the event, a local band, "The Neighbors," volunteered their time to provide entertainment during the evening.
Presenting sponsor for the reception was Carolina West Wireless. Volunteer gifts and doors prizes were donated by Southern Candle, Stillwaters Salon and Day Spa, Trail Dog Outfitters, MerleFest, the John A. Walker Center, WCC Bookstore and the WCC Endowment Corporation.
For information on volunteer opportunities with WCC, the Walker Center, and MerleFest contact Debbie Cangiolosi at 336-838-6264.
