Tharpe is third to enter sheriff's race
by Staff
Willie Tharpe, a resident of the Rock Creek community, this morning became the third candidate to file for the office of Wilkes County sheriff. Tharpe is the only candidate to file with the local elections board since Thursday.
This is Tharpe's third run for the office as he was also a candidate in 1976 and 1990.
Tharpe said, "I've been working on this for the past 20 years. I would like to give the deputies who are working now enough of a raise so that they don't have to work a second job. My main priority, though, is opening up some of these unsolved murder cases. I want to solve some of those cold cases."
Sheriff Dane Mastin has said he will not run for re-election.
Chief Deputy Chris Shew of Wilkesboro and Sharon Call-Diaz of Millers Creek have both filed as Republicans to succeed Mastin. Tony Combs, also a Republican, said this past week that he will file for the office this afternoon.
Keith Gardner of Hickory has joined the field for the U.S. House seat from the 5th District now held by Virginia Foxx, who is running for re-election. Mrs. Foxx and Gardner are Republicans while Billy Kennedy of Boone, the third candidate in the race, is a Democrat.
