Wilkes dog owners show love for pets

The annual Responsible Dog Ownership Day on Saturday drew dozens of animal lovers to the Hidden Oaks Dog Park at Cub Creek Park in Wilkesboro.
"This has been a great success," said Humane Society of Wilkes President Carol Childers to the crowd as the dog show got under way. "We've run out of microchips and lots of pets have visited the rabies clinic.
"Your bringing your animals is what makes this successful, and we had a great time."
The society puts on the event every year to promote responsible dog ownership. The event includes clinics for rabies and implanting microchips under a dog's skin as a means of identification.
There were also tents for vendors selling collars, leashes and pet toys. The humane society also had animal behavior clinics and wellness clinics for dogs at the event.
The Wilkes Veterinary Hospital and the Riverview Animal Hospital participated in the clinics. Also, Sherry Eller of Wilkes Veterinary Hospital and Jeana Huffman of Riverview Animal Hospital served as judges for the dog show.
The dog show winners included:
Best costume: Dinkie with Rita Lankford, first place; Fiona with Shannon Goodman, second place; and Pup with Erin McGrane, third place.
Best tail wagger: Miss Pookie with Robin Holton, first place; Sadie with Steven Barnes, second place; and Shep with Hannah Tretz, third place.
Shortest dog: Dinkie with Rita Lankford, first place; Rusty with Stephanie Woodie, second place; and Gina with Deb Zelensky, third place.
Most curly hair: Coco with Melinda Crawford, first place; and Dinkie with Rita Lankford, second place.
Best trick: Jake with Nanci Slane, first place; Pup with Erin McCane, second place; and Shalaylee with Beth McGuire, third place.
Most obedient: Luke with Vicki Combs, first place.
Most mixed mutt: Max with Bonnie Luttenbacher, first place; Skipper with Marsha Pipes, second place; Shep with Hanna Tretz, third place.
Longest dog: Dante with Claudia Eller, first place; Mr. Sam with Robin Holton, second place.
Face only a mother could love: Fifi with Ginger Stone, first place.
Best kisser: Rusty with Stephanie Woodie, first place; Pickles with Jacob Combs, second place; Max with Bonnie Luttenbacher, third place.
Tallest dog: Gracie with Joanna Cates, first place; Cady with Paul Nielsen, second place; Dante with Claudia Eller, third place.
