Wachovia/Wells Fargo facility losing 70 jobs
by Staff
The Wachovia/Wells Fargo operations center on Brushy Mountain Road in Wilkesboro is losing about 70 jobs, said company officials.
Wachovia/Wells Fargo spokesman Christine Shaw said company officials shared the news with employees at the operations center in Wilkesboro Tuesday.
The work of one group of fixed banking equipment employees will be moved to a facility in Winston-Salem by the beginning of the summer, said Ms. Shaw.
"These team members will have the opportunity to apply for the positions where their work is moving as well as for positions that will allow for some of them to work at home," she said.
The work of another group, which handles adjustments, will be transferred to sites out of North Carolina by the middle of the summer, said Ms. Shaw.
"As was shared at the time of the merger between Wells Fargo and Wachovia, just the size and complexity of this deal would mean that the elimination of positions, unfortunately, would take place across the company because of the duplication of duties or because they no longer fit in the new structure as we continue to move through the integration process," said Ms. Shaw.
"But our commitment to helping team members find other opportunities to remain with Wells Fargo remains strong. Case in point, we have suspended external hiring efforts in order to preserve as many jobs as possible and retain talent in the new company," she said.
Although no details were shared on the number of remaining jobs at the Wachovia/Wells Fargo facility in Wilkesboro, about 200 people were working there early this year.
The Wachovia/Wells Fargo operations center on Brushy Mountain Road was the headquarters of Northwestern Bank when constructed. First Union later acquired Northwestern and Wachovia eventually acquired First Union. |
